Delay in issuance of birth certificates by Corporation irks parents

Staff Reporter

Though computerised, manual procedure is followed

SALEM: The delay in the issue of birth certificates in the Salem Corporation has put a large number of students and their parents into hardships.

Though the Corporation introduced a computerised system recently and promised to issue the birth certificates immediately, it still follows the manual procedures for issuing the document.

Applicants are forced to wait for more than three to four weeks to get the certificates. A number of parents have applied for the certificates as schools are demanding it.

They say that the school authorities are asking for the birth certificates. The admission of the children will be cancelled if there is delay in submitting the certificates.

Shortage of staff

Shortage of staff in the health department has also led to the delay in the issue of the certificates. The officials in the department are yet to process many of the applications.

Taking advantage of the situation, the middlemen are collecting money from the applicants promising that they will get them the certificates quickly.

Councillors brought this issue to the notice of the Corporation during the recent council meeting and urged the civic body to initiate immediate steps to sort out the problem.

But the Corporation is yet to initiate any serious steps to speed up the work.

New system

Officials say that the delay in digitising the old records related to birth registration has hampered implementation of the new computerised system

Corporation Commissioner K.S. Palanisamy said that he had deputed more employees to speed up the process. All the pending applications would be cleared soon, he added.
