Bankers take stock of loan waiver

Bangalore: The 105th edition of the State Level Bankers’ Committee — Karnataka (SLBC) met on Friday to review the performance of the banking sector in terms of supply of credit to the priority sector. It focussed on the performance of the loan waiver scheme which concluded recently.

In his key-note address, Chairman of the SLBC George Joseph, who is also Executive Director, Syndicate Bank, said commercial banks, regional rural banks (RRB) and cooperative institutions in the State had waived debts of more than 8.25 lakh small and marginal farmers aggregating Rs. 2,033 crore.

More than 4.12 lakh farmers in the State benefited from debt relief amounting to Rs. 969 crore.

In all, 12.37 lakh farmers are eligible for debt relief or loan waiver under the scheme, which will cost Rs. 3,002 crore.
