Tap Brahmaputra hydropower: Mathur

Sushanta Talukdar

Guwahati: The new Assam Governor, Shiv Charan Mathur, on Friday stressed the importance of harnessing the hydropower potential of the Brahmaputra network, and said there was no need to construct mega dams.

He called for use of the right technology to tap the river potential.

After assuming office, Mr. Mathur underlined the need for setting up a Brahmaputra Development Authority. He said the Assam Chief Minister was in favour of its formation, and if Arunachal Pradesh agreed to join the Authority, it would go long way in harnessing the vast potential of the river.

The Governor told journalists that he had discussed, during the release of Vision Northeast 2020 document in Delhi, the problem of unplanned water release from dams in Arunachal Pradesh. Both the Governor and the Chief Minister of the neighbouring State agreed to sit together to hammer out a solution.

The Asom Gana Parishad and the All Assam Students Union have joined NGOs such as Krishak Mukti Sangram in demanding a moratorium on construction of mega dams in Arunachal Pradesh.
