dated July 5, 1958: Lebanese crisis

Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, the U.N. Secretary-General, referring to Lebanese charges of “massive intervention” in its internal affairs by the United Arab Republic, said in New York on July 3: “To my knowledge we have no foundation for such a judgment now.” He had been asked at a press conference how many more observers he planned to send to Lebanon, and whether he agreed with the view that the observer team had “slowed down or stopped infiltration.” Mr. Hammarskjoeld replied that he would send as many observers as Major General Odd Bull of Norway asked for.
