Plastic traders plan to observe fast on July 7

PUDUCHERRY: The All Pondicherry Plastic Traders and Manufacturers Association has said that the manufacturers of plastic are facing hardship owing to frequent power cuts across Puducherry, especially at Mettupalayam industrial estate, and have urged the government to take measures on a war-footing to end the crisis.

The association, in a release, said there were 8,000 registered and 9,000 unregistered firms involved in manufacturing of plastic in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. The industries provided direct employment to three lakh people and indirectly to five lakh people. There were 2,400 plastic industries in Puducherry.

Frequent power cuts across Puducherry, especially at the Mettupalayam industrial estate, were affecting the manufacturers. The government said it would provide power supply for 15 days in a month, the association added.

The association put forward various demands to the Central government including the removal of 5 per cent customs duty and 4 per cent additional import duty on the import of plastic raw material and increasing the excise duty ceiling limit for small industries from the existing 1.5 crore to 5 crore.

To put forward their demands, the plastic industries in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry would observe a fast on July 7 in Chennai, the release said.
