Trucks are back on road

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Following an assurance from the Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways that the hike in toll tax would be rolled back and that the old rates (prevailing earlier to December 1, 2007 from when the hike came into force) would be restored, the truckers called off their strike on Friday.

A press release from the Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents Association said the Ministry had promised not to increase the tax for the next one year.

A promise to set up a high-level committee comprising members from National Highways Authority of India, All India Motor Transport Congress and other road sector experts to look into all road-related issues including levy of user fee had been made.
