NAMAKKAL: The government will establish an old age home in each district, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan has said.
The government has planned to set up the homes with the aim to ensure better care for the aged persons, she said after inaugurating a new commercial complex constructed at Mallasamudram, near here, recently.
The complex was constructed at a cost of Rs. 10 lakh allotted from the constituency development fund of Ms. Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan.
The Minister further said that the local administration would be able to generate about Rs. 3 lakh as revenue from the newly constructed complex per annum. The income from the complex could be spent for creating various basic amenities including drinking water supply provisions, roads and streetlights, she suggested.
She said that the State Government was sanctioning adequate funds under various schemes for the holistic development of rural areas. She said that she had earmarked a major portion of her constituency development fund for the construction of buildings.
Collector U. Sagayam, presiding over the function, said a total of nine shops were constructed in the complex.
The district administration would continue to initiate steps for improving the quality of life of people living below the poverty line.
