CHANDIGARH: The two-day 17th edition of the annual Mango Mela organised by Haryana Tourism and the Haryana Horticulture Department opens at the historic Yadavindra Gardens in Pinjore near here on Saturday. Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary (Agriculture) Raj Kumar said the main objective of the fair is to encourage farmers to adopt the latest technologies to increase their production and improve the quality of their produce so that they get maximum returns from their limited land holdings. It would also provide a forum to mango growers to sell their produce in the domestic and international market. A Food Court will be set up at the fair and cultural programmes will be organised. The fair would provide a common platform to about 40 self-help groups to display and sell their mango-based products. Craftsmen are also expected to participate. Farmers are being trained in mango cultivation at the Horticulture Training Institute in Uchani (Karnal). Four food parks at Saha (Ambala), Dabwali (Sirsa), Narwana (Jind) and Rai (Sonipat) are being set up to overcome the problems of processing and distress sale and to reduce post-harvest losses. State Agriculture Minister Harmohinder Singh Chatha will inaugurate the fair. Minister of State for Tourism Kiran Choudhry will preside over the inaugural function. Haryana Governor A.R. Kidwai would chair the prize distribution ceremony.
