BERHAMPUR: Some persons, who had gave up their and for establishment of the Army Air Defence College (AADC) near Gopalpur in Ganjam district alleged that they have till date not received proper compensation for the coconut trees on their land. They are around 30 coconut farmers of Bauxipalli, Adtalapalli and Golabandha villages. Their land was acquired in 1965 by the State government for the establishment of the project of the Defence Department. Most of the coconut farmers of the area were not satisfied with the low compensation rate fixed by the government then. They had approached the High Court and also the Supreme Court demanding better compensation. Deciding a civil appeal no. 3614 of 1997 the Supreme Court in 1997 had directed the land acquisition officers in Orissa to re-determine the compensation amount in accordance to the order passed by High Court. Many coconut farmers who applied to the district administration could get enhanced compensation. According to social activist, A.R.Varma several ignorant and illiterate coconut farmers did not apply and are till date deprived of their due compensation for the coconut trees. Recently these coconut farmers have united and approached the Ganjam district Collector regarding the matter. They have requested the Collector to take initiative so that they get their compensation.
