MLA announces Rs. 5-crore plan for Chitradurga

CHITRADURGA: S.K. Basavarajan, MLA, has announced a Rs. 5-crore plan to improve infrastructure in Chitradurga city.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, he said that several important proposals had been made for the betterment of the city with assistance from the district administration.

A proposal had been made to shift the Santhe Honda market to the private bus stand and relocate the bus stand to the Police Samudaya Bhavan area or near the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus depot where vacant land is available.

The vegetable market complex would be demolished to build a parking lot in the basement.

A new complex for vegetable vendors would be built on top of the parking lot.

Mr. Basavarajan said the Government would be asked for funds to develop a park on 50 acres of land in the Timmanayakana Lake area.

“We will wait for the Government’s approval, or else the park will be developed by the City Municipal Council (CMC) itself.” Union Park near the government bus stand would also be improved with CMC funds, he said.

It had been decided to construct a building at the district library for those planning to write competitive examinations. They would be provided with all the latest books and course material for these examinations, he said.

Vacant land opposite the Rotary Bal Bhavan would be converted into a parking lot, he said.

Mr. Basavarajan said that work on the Ambedkar Bhavan would begin soon for which land near the Veera Soudha had been identified.

Mr. Basavarajan said he was opposed to the decision to hold the Kannada Sahitya Sammelan in Chitradurga this year.

The city did not have adequate infrastructure for the big event, and it would not be right to hold such a prestigious programme now. “It will take three or four years for the city to be ready for the event. We will be blamed if we hold the event without the required infrastructure,” he said.

Mr. Basavarajan said Bellary was keen on holding the sammelan. “If we are still forced to hold the event here, we will have to do it half-heartedly,” he said.
