Special Correspondent

Divakaran says the aim is to prevent price rise during Onam.

Thiruvananthapuram: Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran on Friday announced market intervention programmes to prevent price rise during the Onam season. The steps include new-look Onam fairs to take on big retail chains.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Divakaran said all public sector undertakings under his Ministry would participate in the fairs.

Metro People’s Bazaars would function in Thiruvananthapuram (From August 17), Ernakulam, Kollam, Thrissur and Kozhikode (August 27). Onam Town People’s Bazaars would be organised in Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Alappuzha, Palakkad, Malappuram, Thalassery and Kannur during the period. The 2000-odd Maveli Stores would hold mini-bazaars, he said.

Apart from the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation, the Kerala State Poultry Development Corporation, Milma, the Kerala Livestock Development Board (KLDB) and Kerafed would have special pavilions at the people’s bazaars.

The Supplyco would come out with special Onam family kits for which it would offer discounts over and above the special rates for the kits. There would be a special pavilion for this known as the Onam Bazaar Gift Corner. All essential commodities would be available at these bazaars, he said. The price of rice would be maintained at the current levels of Rs.16 a kg for quality rice and Rs.14 a kg for ordinary rice. Milma would launch two new products, while the KLDB would come out with a new beef product.

The Poultry Development Corporation would launch organic and native breed chicken, the Minister said.
