CHANDIGARH: Punjab Health Minister Lakshmi Kanta Chawla disclosed here on Friday that 400 quintals of fungus-ridden pickles and ‘murabba’ were seized and destroyed during a raid at Ganapati Food Products in Samana in Patiala district. Ms Chawla said that during the raid the food items were found to be full of fungus and were stored in large plastic tanks. Five samples were tested at a laboratory here and found to be adulterated and unfit for human consumption. The Health Minister added that in accordance with directives issued by the court, the food items were publicly destroyed and dumped in garbage dumping grounds at the outskirts of Samana. The Minister further added that the Government had already taken a strict view of similar incidents in the past and traders would not be allowed to play with the lives of the people. She emphasised that the traders deserved stringent punishment for selling un-hygienic and adulterated food products. Ms Chawla said that she had taken up the matter with the Chief Minister and askedto strengthen laws to check adulteration of food products.
