Jammu peaceful, but curfew stays

Jammu: A day after a joint appeal for by prominent citizens of Jammu, the region was by and large peaceful on Friday though curfew remained in several areas for the fourth consecutive day.

The bandh, called by the BJP, the Shiv Sena, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bajrang Dal to protest cancellation of Baltal land allotment to Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board has already been extended till July 6.

In Jammu city, stray incidents were reported in Kashmiri Pandit-dominated areas at Muthi. However, Rapid Action Force personnel quelled the protests. There was no report of injury in the city, which had witnessed large-scale violence in the last five days. When curfew was relaxed in the city from 5 to 6 p.m., people came out to buy essential commodities.

In the curfew-bound Kathua, which saw large-scale protests on Thursday, there were incidents of violation of the order with protesters targeting the residence of Congress associate member and local MLA Babu Singh.

No private vehicle was allowed into Jammu and Kashmir from Lakhapur entry point, which is in Kathua district. An exception was made for Amarnath-bound pilgrims.
