Uttarakhand police ban ‘Dak Kanwar’

Dehra Dun: Ahead of the annual “Shravan Maas” Kanwar mela beginning on July 18 in Uttarakhand, the State police have decided to put a ban on use of “Dak Kanwar”, vehicles carrying music systems.

The Inspector-General of Police (Garhwal region) said they have decided to ban the use of those vehicles during the Kanwar mela which would be fitted with music systems as the pilgrims play them on high volume and could cause anxiety among the people of the hill State.

The police have roped in sadhus and saints for maintaining discipline during the pilgrimage, I-G Ashok Kumar said.

The Uttarakhand police are expecting nearly one crore Kanwarias (disciples of Lord Shiva) to come to Hardwar and nearby holy places during the month-long pilgrimage, which is fast emerging as the biggest annual religious event of North India. -- PTI
