New Delhi
NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has this year received online property tax payments from about 5,000 non-resident Indians having properties in Delhi and living in 97 countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, China and Russia among others. In addition to NRIs, nearly 20,000 property tax payers living in various cities of India and having properties in Delhi have also paid their property tax online. Announcing the report card on online property tax collections here on Friday, MCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta said the civic body had received an overwhelming response from property tax payers. The number of property tax payers depositing online property tax up to June 30 this year has shot up to 246,725 compared with 96,890 last year. The civic body has collected a total of Rs.422.91 crore as property tax and transfer duty up to June 30 this year compared with Rs.382.40 crore collected last year during the same period. The total recovery of property tax manually amounted to Rs.213.77 crore whereas the total recovery from online payment system was Rs.89.60 crore. “These records clearly prove that the online system for depositing property tax has been popular not only in Delhi but also abroad as well as in other cities of India,” said Mr. Gupta. The online property tax amount is collected by Axis Bank, HDFC and ITz Cash counters and the taxpayer can pay the tax online by way of credit card or by ITz Cash. In both cases, the receipt is generated instantaneously. However, when the taxpayer pays through cheque or draft or cash up to Rs.2,000, a “challan” is generated and the same is deposited in Axis Bank or Zonal Help Centres. The MCD has set a target of achieving property tax collection of Rs.1,400 crore this year compared with last year’s target of Rs.1,200 crore. Mentioning the significant property tax recoveries made from government departments and organisations, Mr. Gupta said the civic body had received Rs.7 crore from the Airports Authority of India during the current financial year and that it expected to recover Rs.35 crore from the Delhi Jal Board and Rs.27 crore from Delhi Power Company Limited and Rs.12 crore from Delhi Transport Corporation shortly. Outstanding arrearsHe also said that the MCD was trying its best to recover outstanding property tax arrears from the Delhi Development Authority and all other government agencies and departments which have outstanding property tax dues of about Rs.450 crore in all against them.
