Crime on the rise in East Delhi colonies

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Federation of Indraprastha Extension Societies Residents’ Welfare Association has expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in East Delhi.

“Incidents of chain snatching, car theft and robbery are on the rise in East Delhi. The majority of news on crime originates from this part of the city,” said Federation of I.P. Extension Societies RWA secretary-general G. S. Aggarwal.

Pointing out that societies in Patparganj were considered safe until not long ago, Mr. Aggarwal said thefts are now taking place even inside the premises of societies. “Taking a walk has become unsafe for women anywhere in I.P. Extension. Chain snatching incidents are frequent and the police do not even bother to register an FIR,” he added. According to Baldev Kocher of Surajmal Vihar RWA, the law and order situation in Anand Vihar is “very bad” as car and car accessory thefts, house burglaries and incidents of chain snatching have shot up in the recent past.

According to N.N. Mishra of Mayur Vihar Phase II, two chain snatchers shot at three police officers in Mandawali in February while they were being taken to the police station for interrogation. “Both were carrying country-made pistols. Fortunately no one was injured. On June 10, two women were seriously injured at Chilla village in Mayur Vihar after being shot by some goons,” he said.

Mr. Mishra said in another incident on June 14 one businessman escaped with minor injuries after being shot at by snatchers.
