Lorries impounded for illegal sand mining

CAUGHT: The trouble tankers detained on Friday. —

TAMBARAM: Staff of the Revenue Department compounded eight lorries that were involved in the illegal mining of sand and extraction of groundwater from different places in the southern suburbs of Chennai in the past few days. P.Jayaraman, Tambaram tahsildar, said complaints had been received about the illegal extraction of groundwater at Kovilambakkam Rose Nagar and in Medavakkam.

Following complaints, staff of the taluk office conducted surprise checks and confiscated four water tankers.

The tankers were detained in the Madipakkam police station. Similarly, four lorries and an earth-moving equipment that were illegally mining mud in Gowl Bazaar were also confiscated, Mr. Jayaraman added.
