KARAIKAL: The Karaikal district administration in the Union Territory of Puducherry on Friday has stated that the wages due to the workers engaged under the National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREG) scheme would be credited into their personal savings accounts in the banks in the district. Collector N. Vasanthakumar said that the managers of commercial banks had requested for a week for opening savings bank accounts for all the casual workers. The Collector said that 11,000 workers were engaged under the NREG scheme in Karaikal district and pointed out that these workers would be given work till March 2009. Under the NREG scheme, a member of poor family would be given job for a minimum period of 100 days per year at a minimum wage of Rs.80 per day. The Collector pointed out that the NREG works in the district had been suspended temporarily as the agricultural workers were engaged in cultivation of kuruvai paddy crop in various parts of the district.
