Detonators theft case: two more held

R. Rajaram

TIRUCHI: Special teams have recovered more electric and ordinary detonators following the confession by eight accused arrested last month on charges of stealing over 17,000 detonators from a private godown in Punnam Chathiram in Karur district.

M. Sakthi and Velusamy, both from Soragai village in Salem district, have been arrested in connection with the case. Police sources told The Hindu on Friday that interrogation of Sakthi, who had surrendered before a court in Salem two days ago, led to the seizure of 4,600 electric detonators and 2,400 ordinary detonators from Kundampatti village in Omalur taluk in Salem district on Friday.

The sources said Velusamy was arrested on June 30 at Soragai and his interrogation resulted in the seizure of 4,000 electric detonators and 2,400 ordinary detonators. The explosives were seized from a private blue metal unit in Mettur in Salem district.

Over 17,000 detonators were at first reported stolen on a complaint lodged by the godown owner P. Murugesan. A few days later, Murugesan informed the police that more detonators had been stolen. The sources now say as many as 41,500 electric detonators and 10,000 ordinary detonators were stolen from the explosives godown. Of this, the special teams have recovered 26,500 electric detonators and 4,800 ordinary detonators.

The police are on the look out for two more persons. The arrested were allegedly involved in stealing explosives from godowns located in remote areas and had been selling the same illegally to quarry owners.
