Increase awareness of schemes among tribals: Minister

Minister for Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare A. Tamilarasi presiding over the second meeting of the State Tribal Welfare Board held in Chennai on Friday.
CHENNAI: Minister for Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare A. Tamilarasi requested members of the State Tribal Welfare Board to take initiatives to increase awareness among tribals about various welfare schemes available to them and issue more identity cards so that the Rs. 1 crore allocated for tribal welfare could be utilised effectively.
She was speaking at the second meeting of the State Tribal Welfare Board held here on Friday.
Enumerating the schemes implemented by the Tamil Nadu government for tribal welfare, the Minister said that Rs. 4.3 lakh was allocated last year for the Indian Council of Medical Research project to increase sanitation awareness and healthcare facilities among tribals. A sum of Rs. 659 lakh had been kept aside for development of mountainous regions, she said. Among other welfare schemes for the tribals, she said that efforts were under way to improve quality of schools for tribal children and improve housing and sanitation for the tribals.
