TO SERVE THE NATION: Newly recruited constables take the oath at a passing-out parade at the Special Armed Police grounds in the city on Friday. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 200-plus newly recruited police personnel held a ceremonial parade at the Special Armed Police parade grounds on Friday morning marking the finale of their nine-month-long training. The parade symbolising unity, camaraderie and discipline among the police force began with the ‘slow march’ followed by the ‘quick march’ and winding up with the ‘review order’ and the ‘peeling off,’ symbolising the joining of the police force. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan took the customary salute from a make-shift podium erected on the ground. Though a pass in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination was the prescribed qualification, a good number of the new-recruits were graduates. There were also 32 postgraduates, three LLB holders, one MBA and an engineering graduate. Speaking at the function, Mr. Balakrishnan hoped that the infusion of highly qualified candidates would help improve the image of the police before the public. “Ensuring the dignity and human rights of the public should be the primary responsibility of the police force,” he said. Mr. Balakrishnan said the Kerala Police Act would be reformed by next year. “Our aim is to modernise the police force.” The Minister also noted there was no incident of lock-up or custodial death in the year 2007. During the training at the Special Armed Police camp the candidates are taught everything from driving and swimming to computer proficiency and survival skills in the wild.
