9,000 part-time teachers to be appointed

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: To enable students to score high marks in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination, the Government has decided to appoint 9,000 teachers on part-time basis in 3,000 pre-Matric students’ hostels run by the Social Welfare Department.

Minister for Social Welfare D. Sudhakar told presspersons on Friday that students belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Backward Classes and minorities have recorded an average pass percentage but scored low grades owing to under performance in three subjects — Mathematics, Science and English. The Minister held a meeting with MLAs belonging to the SC and ST category and discussed various problems faced in the management of SC/ST, backward classes and minority students’ hostels in the State.

The pass percentage of SC students in 2008 SSLC examination was 56.99 per cent, ST students (60.66), and OBC (65.43).

The general category students recorded 71.20 per cent pass.
