Aerobics tones up workout hours

More and more people are turning to aerobics to keep fit, the reason why more and more aerobic centres are coming up.

“In an aerobic class, you can train without being self-conscious. You exercise along with many others to the words of a trainer and tune of music and facing the mirror,” says Rohit Thayyil of Agile Aerobics Centre at East Nadakkavu in Kozh ikode.

People of all ages can do this exercise. However, those above 60 need to be certified fit by the doctor. “You do not stand still during this entire workout. Whenever you are between two exercises, you will be moving,” Mr. Thayyil says.

“The exercise is most beneficial for obese persons. It may also ease breathing if one has problems. One would not exercise daily or continue to do it if one is at home. But at the aerobic classes where there is a group, you enjoy doing it,” Sabina Aslam, doctor at Shiba Hospital here, says. Step aerobics has been practised by millions worldwide since the 1980s.

Jyothi Jagannath, who runs a beauty parlour, says aerobics is the best way to maintain the body. “Also, everybody loves to dance. It is also not strenuous,” she says.

A majority of those seeking aerobic classes are women.
