Hear us: Secondary grade teachers staging a dharna in front of taluk office in Krishangiri on Saturday to press demands. – Krishnagiri: Members of the Tamil Nadu Elementary School Teachers Federation on Saturday staged a dharna in front of the Revenue Divisional Office here to press 20-point charter of demands. The demands, included filling vacancies, fixation of time-scale pay for teachers drawing consolidated wages and restoration of retirement benefits, 15 days of surrender leave and bonus. They wanted the Government to change the teacher-student ratio to 1:30 and provide impetus to nurture rural education. It should appoint Additional Headmasters in all schools irrespective of the student strength. The members asked the Government to extend benefits provided to graduate teachers to those who had completed their M.Phil and Ph.D. The Government should take steps to improve the quality of education and revert to the teacher-student ratio of 1:30. New pension scheme must be dropped. Graduate level teachers appointed as middle level staff must be announced as graduate level teachers with commensurate salary. Preference must be given to teacher training candidates aged above 35 on the basis of seniority while registering with the employment office. District president P. Venkatesan led the dharna.
