Debt relief committees sought

Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE: The Bharatiya Raitha Okkuta has demanded that the State Government set up Debt Relief Committees (DRCs) at the district level, comprising lead bank officers, lending bank officers, officials of the district administration and farmer leaders, to help farmer.

It said that the formation of DRCs would go a long way in settling the debts of farmers in a smooth manner and prevent them from resorting to suicide.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, Lingaraju and Nagaraja Rao, office-bearers of the okkuta, said the former Prime Ministers Morarji Desai and Charan Singh had formed such committees while in office, which had effectively helped farmers settle their debts.

Suicide

A large number of farmers in the State were committing suicide as they were unable to repay their debts. Hence, the formulation of DRCs was the right thing to do, they said.
