Upper Bhadra project will be implemented: Minister

Rs. 5,900-crore project will take five years to complete

Chitradurga: Revenue Minister G. Karunakar Reddy has said that the Government is serious about implementing the Upper Bhadra Project in the district.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, he said the project was estimated to cost Rs. 5,900 crore. The project would be undertaken in five phases and completed in five years.

Revival of lakes

Under the scheme, 200 lakes would be revived to provide drinking water to Kolar and Tumkur districts. Mr. Reddy, who is also the district in-charge Minister, said Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa had asked officials of the niravari nigam to prepare a detailed report on the project. “The Chief Minister wants the project to be included in the Budget, for which he wants to go through the report,” Mr. Reddy added.

He said Energy Minister K.S. Eshwarappa, who is said to have in-depth knowledge of the project as he was Minister for Water Resources in the previous government, had promised to help the Government in ensuring its successful implementation. About the agitation by farmers of Hiriyur taluk who are demanding inclusion of the Vani Vilas Sagar project under Scheme A of the Bachawat Tribunal Aware, Mr. Reddy said that as all the projects under Scheme A had been taken up, the project would be included in Scheme B. Under the scheme, 15 tmcft of water would be provided to Hiriyur for irrigation, he added.

Sammelan

Asked what his stand on holding the Kannada Sahitya Sammelan in the district was, the Minister said, “If Kannada aficionados want to hold the event here, the Government will offer complete support. No opposition by an MLA can be tolerated.”

The proposal to hold the sammelan in the district has been opposed by local MLA S.K. Basavarajan citing inadequate infrastructure.
