VIJAYAWADA: DuPont, a global company that specialises in manufacture of a number of chemical products used in agriculture, has come out with two herbicides that can work on a broad range of weeds in paddy and sugarcane. ‘Londax Power’, a granular herbicide, is meant for broad spectrum weed control in paddy, while ‘Velpar K4’ has been launched for protection of sugarcane crop. Ram K. Mudhokar, business director – South Asia for crop protection products in DuPont, said at a press conference on Saturday that Londax Power would work only on transplanted paddy cultivated in Andhra Pradesh and a few other States. It could be used independently or along with sand and fertiliser in the paddy fields. A 4-kg pack, which was enough for an acre of crop, was priced at Rs.650. Velpar K4, priced at Rs.1,025 a bottle, was enough for an acre of crop, Mr. Mudholkar said, adding that it was a “first-of-its-kind weed control solution” in India targeting more than 20 types of weeds for sugarcane. “It effectively controls grasses and broad leaves up to 75 days to 90 days, while the herbicides available in the market now can work only up to 45 days,” he said. Mr. Mudholkar said another seven products would be launched in 2008.
