“The move to increase seats will cater to immediate requirements and there is no need for students to panic” PUDUCHERRY: The Education Department has decided to increase the number of seats in Standard XI by 555, as per the requirements at all government higher secondary schools in the Union Territory. Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan on Saturday told The Hindu that the department would increase the number of seats in all government higher secondary schools immediately. The Directorate of School Education had started counselling for admission on June 26, beginning with students belonging to special categories such as physically challenged, wards of ex-servicemen, freedom fighters and sports persons. The classes for Standard XI were scheduled to start on July 9. However, the counselling process was temporarily suspended on June 30. According to the Directorate, the Union Territory had 48 government higher secondary schools with 11,200 seats in Standard XI. “The demand for science group is more among the students when compared to arts. We have sufficient seats for the arts group. We will increase the seats wherever there is a demand, in whichever school. The works are already in the process and will be sorted out by Tuesday,” Mr. Shahjahan said. The move to increase the seats would cater to immediate requirements, he said, adding that there was no need for students to panic as everyone would get a seat. More sections“We will start the admission process immediately after increasing the seats, depending on the demand in each school. By next year, we will start increasing the sections in the schools. This requires time as additional infrastructure should be developed and we need to recruit more teachers too,” Mr. Shahjahan said. The counselling would begin on July 7.
