PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) on Saturday staged a demonstration to protest the arrest of Vanniar Sangam president ‘Kaduvetti’ Guru by the Tamil Nadu police.

Led by secretary of the Puducherry unit of the party and PMK Parliamentary party leader M. Ramadass, the activists staged the protest near the New Bus Stand. Members of the Legislative Assembly R.K.R. Anantharaman, N.G. Pannirselvam and Arul Murugan participated.

Cuddalore

PMK MLA T.Velmurugan, who is also the State organising secretary of the party, led a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Saturday, seeking the immediate release of Mr. Guru.

Earlier, Mr. Velumurugan told reporters that PMK founder S.Ramadoss had directed the cadres to stage protest against arrests and cases foisted on party functionaries in a peaceful manner, without damaging government and public property.

Mr. Velmurugan said that recently the Director-General of Police had stated that there was no prima facie case nor was there any intention to arrest Mr. Guru.

However, soon after the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam snapped ties with the PMK, the police were foisting cases on PMK functionaries and MLAs.

The police, who went in strength to Mr. Guru’s house, had not produced any arrest warrant.

They had damaged the household articles and also harassed the family members, Mr. Velmurugan said.

Villupuram

In Villupuram, 53 PMK cadres, including three women, were arrested by the police when they took out a protest march from the Gandhi statue to the Collectorate, defying a police order.

They raised slogans condemning Mr. Guru’s arrest. They urged the authorities to release him immediately.
