BERHAMPUR: A group of school students of the city took out a cycle rally under the banner of All India Democratic Students’ Organization protesting against the non-availability of textbooks in the market.

They also demanded the Board of Secondary Education (BSE) of Orissa to declare the tenth class Board examination results of students whose results are still withheld. They demanded changes in management of Secondary School Board examination in the State to curb errors that have occurred this year in the conduct of the examination.

Somnath Behera, city committee secretary of the AIDSO, said results of around 13,000 students who had appeared the tenth class Board examination this year were not yet declared. But the admission processes of +2 courses have already started.

The students’ organisation also raised doubts over evaluation process citing examples that some students, who secured above 90 per cent marks in all subjects, have got zero or fail marks in single papers.

They wanted a high-level enquiry into all allegations of corruption in the BSE.

The shortage of textbooks in the market was also major issue of the agitators. The schools have reopened and new sessions have started. But most of the students of classes VIII, IX and X are yet to get new textbooks.

The textbooks are printed and distributed by the textbook press of the government. The book sellers said stocks of new books for these classes were yet to arrive.

The students said now they were compelled to use old books of past students. They alleged that the shortage of textbooks may be artificial to enable the ‘guide books’ published by private publishers have a good market.
