Thiruvananthapuram
Time to rejoice: The former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran celebrating his 90th birthday with daughter Padmaja, Congress leaders and others in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday. Thiruvananthapuram: Hundreds of people including party workers, well-wishers, political leaders and prominent social and cultural personalities turned up to wish veteran Congress leader K. Karunakaran on his 90th birthday on Saturday. An apparently relaxed and happy Karunakaran welcomed all visitors with a traditional ‘sadya.’ The birthday celebration was quite different this time from similar functions in the past. The 90th birthday had little political colour but it proved to be the reflection of his reach going by the list of guests that included former Chief Secretaries, politicians and so on. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala, BJP leader O. Rajagopal, Kerala Congress leader R. Balakrishna Pillai and the former Meghalaya Governor M.M. Jacob were among those who greeted Mr. Karunakaran on Saturday. Mr. Karunakaran’s son K. Muraleedharan had not turned up. Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy and Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan called on Mr. Karunakaran on Friday.
