Elephant was shot twice, reveals post-mortem report

Udhagamandalam: A post-mortem examination of the male elephant killed by poachers in the Singara beat near here on Friday has revealed that it was shot using a country-made rifle.

Forest veterinarian Kalaivanan told The Hindu over phone from Mudumalai that the animal was shot twice. After being shot in the left shoulder, the pachyderm ran a few hundred metres when it was shot again in the right hump. Conservator of Forests R. Kannan said Special Task Force personnel were assisting in the combing. Field Director, Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Rajeev Kumar Srivastava, said anti-poaching camps had been strengthened. Help of wildlife authorities in Karnataka and Kerala had been sought for joint patrolling.

Superintendent of Police A.G. Babu said vigil had been stepped up at check-posts.
