Rs.450 crore for water projects

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned Rs. 449.89 crore for 36 rural drinking water projects in 12 districts. The outlay is Rs. 670.16 crore.

They had been submitted as a special package for assistance from NABARD (SPAN). Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran said on Saturday that these had been stalled after spending Rs. 170 crore.

They were submitted for NABARD assistance within record time. The amount of assistance was a record considering the fact that the total assistance from NABARD so far came to only Rs. 44.5 crore.

The Minister said that monitoring committees headed by MLAs would oversee “time-bound and transparent” implementation of the projects. These projects were taken up on a priority basis with the objective of ensuring safe drinking water to all by 2010-11.

The government was trying to get assistance for some more projects included under SPAN.
