There are 12 lakh construction workers in State 39,000 have enrolled themselves with welfare Board BANGALORE: Labour Minister B.N. Bacche Gowda on Saturday said that the newly constituted Karnataka State Construction Workers Welfare Board had collected Rs. 83 crore as cess from builders for the welfare of the 12 lakh construction workers in the State. The builders include all Union and State Government departments, boards, corporations, private companies and contractors who hire construction workers. Mr. Gowda was speaking to reporters after a meeting with members of the Board and Labour Commissioner K.S. Manjunath. He said that masons, bar benders, asphalt workers, plumbers, electricians and others engaged in construction had enrolled with the Board to become eligible for benefits. Migrant workersHe said that many builders with construction plans of more than Rs. 10 lakh had registered themselves and paid one per cent of the cost of the project as cess to the Board. Of the 12 lakh workers, most of them migrant, only 39,000 had enrolled themselves with the Board for a monthly payment scheme of Rs. 10. The Minister said that the members were eligible for medical expenses up to Rs. 50,000 for the treatment of heart and kidney ailments and cancer. Women would get a maternity benefit of Rs. 6,000 for two children. Their children would get scholarships. Mr. Gowda said that the Government had earmarked Rs. 30 crore for the welfare of workers and their families, including health insurance. If a worker died while on the job his family would get compensation of Rs. 1 lakh. Mr. Gowda said the Board had bought five acres of land at Ramanagaram from the Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority for constructing a training centre for construction workers.
