Left is awaiting Pranab’s reply, says Karat

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The Left is awaiting a reply from External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on whether or not the Centre will go ahead with seeking IAEA board approval of the safeguards agreement as part of the India-U.S. nuclear deal.

This was stated by Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat here on Saturday. Mr. Mukherjee is the convener of the UPA-Left committee on the deal.

Earlier, Mr. Karat met veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu. The meeting came a day after the Left parties set a July 7 deadline for the United Progressive Alliance government to clarify its stand on the safeguards agreement.

Mr. Karat, along with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and CPI(M) West Bengal Committee secretary Biman Bose, was closeted with Mr. Basu for more than 40 minutes.
