NEW DELHI: Accusing the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government of not being able to control inflation, Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Vardhan has demanded resignation of Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram now that inflation has crossed 11 per cent. In a statement, Dr. Vardhan said the situation was very bad in the Capital and the price rise had broken all records. “While earlier only pulses had gone beyond the reach of the common people, now prices of vegetables too have soared leaving the people high and dry,” he said. The BJP leader alleged that the public distribution system in the Capital had failed completely and foodgrains meant for ration shops were being diverted to godowns of black-marketers. “In order to mislead the people, the Centre and the Delhi Government are talking about regularising unauthorised colonies,” he charged. Dr. Vardhan said in the past four years of the Congress rule inflation had been rising and there had been a shortage of daily necessities. “During the National Democratic Alliance rule, not only were these things readily available but were even exported to other countries,” he added. Accusing the Left parties of not caring about the common man, he said: “The Left parties have been giving empty threats for the past four years of pulling down the Central Government on issues like nuclear deal, but they have not been doing anything to confront the Congress on the price rise front.”
