‘Uphold core values of democracy’

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: India should be proud of its achievement in preserving and sustaining democracy and one need not term such a feeling as jingoistic, former chairman of the Legislative Council B.K. Chandrasekhar has said.

He was delivering the Siddavanahalli Krishna Sharma Memorial Lecture organised by the Gandhi Sahitya Sangha here on Friday.

Prof. Chandrasekhar said that democracy had been successful in the country because of the farsightedness of leaders such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajaji, Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Babu Rajendra Prasad and B.R. Ambedkar.

Mr. Chandrasekhar said that there was an urgent need to uphold the core values of democracy such as freedom and all-round development. Mr. Chandrasekhar emphasised the need to evolve an egalitarian society and improve the quality of governance. This would prevent political parties from using caste groups as vote banks and help in taking collection action, he added.

Two-party system

The former Minister Haranahalli Ramaswamy presided over the function.

Evolution of a two-party system was the panacea for the present ills of Indian democracy, he said.

He advocated cancellation of membership of legislators in case of misconduct or if found obstructing the business of the legislature.

Sangha president Neelathalli Kasturi welcomed the gathering.
