Three-year project to take care of old people

RAMANATHAPURAM: HelpAge India, a non-governmental organisation working for the cause of elderly people and Emirates Trading Agency (ETA) Ascon Star Group have started a three-year project to help old people living Below Poverty Line in the district.

Inaugurating a mobile medi-care unit and eye screening camp here on Saturday, Syed M. Salahuddin, Managing Director, ETA Ascon Star Group, said that the company would sponsor Rs.50.53 lakh to the project for the three years. The aim of the programme was to provide economic, health, social and emotional concerns to people above 60 years so that they could lead a productive and satisfying life.

It would enable provisions for preventive health care activities, referral arrangements for specialist treatment and medical check-up. The mobile unit, consisting qualified medical practitioner, pharmacist and a driver, would serve the elders living in and around Ramanathapuram and Kilakarai.

Expressing concern over the increasing trend of opening old age homes, Mr. Salahuddin said that parents, who had provided everything to bring their children up, should not be forgotten in their old age. They require love, affection and care from their near and dear ones and should be allowed to lead a dignified life in their old age.
