Pipeline in 650 metres to be laid through middle of the road, 150 metres through tunnelling Hyderabad: Chances of the city getting an additional 22 mgd of drinking water under Krishna Project Phase II have brightened with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) taking up the final stretch of laying the Ring Main II from Rail Nilayam to Mettiguda. In the next three months, water woes of residents of Marredpally, Cantonment Board, Malkajgiri municipality and some areas in Secunderabad will end when the Krishna water flows. Presently, the Krishna water is coming up to Tarnaka and the other areas are being supplied water from Singur reservoir. Once Krishna water comes through, the Singur water will be diverted to shortfall areas of Kukatpally, Qutbullapur, Balanagar, Banjara Hills and Prakashnagar, said HMWSSB Managing Director G. Asok Kumar. Of the 24-km distance from Sahebnagar to Marredpally, the Board has laid pipeline to a distance of 23.2 km. The remaining work has been hanging fire for seven months for want of permission from the South Central Railway. The delay is stated to be on account of the spat between the Railways and the GHMC on the question of road widening involving the SCR land. PrecautionsA vexed HMWSSB has now decided to lay the pipeline through the middle of the road for a distance of 650 metres and the remaining 150 metres through tunnelling from under the railway tracks. While the road excavation will be taken up right away, tunnelling will take some time as it involves shifting of machinery. This specialised work has been awarded to Sood & Company, experts in tunnelling work. All precautions are being taken not to affect the rail traffic, said Gowtham Reddy, Director, (Projects), HMWSSSB. Awaiting launchThough the Krishna Phase II awaits formal inauguration, the twin cities are already availing its water from March 2007. Of the 90 mgd planned to be tapped, 68 mgd is already being availed now and the remaining is expected to come in the next three months.
