CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC) has turned down the request of Information Technology companies for reduction in the proposed toll for Rajiv Gandhi Salai. Representatives of the IT companies located on Rajiv Gandhi Salai were informed by the top TNRDC officials, the State Highways Department and the connected agencies that the government cannot afford to reduce the toll. The TNRDC is constructing a 10-lane toll plaza at Perungudi. The toll for one-way travel for three wheelers including auto-rickshaws from Perungudi to Siruseri has been fixed at Rs.6; for four-wheelers at Rs.17. Buses including those operated by the State Road Transport Corporation will be charged Rs.44 and trucks Rs.66. However, TNRDC officials have agreed to consider a request made by these companies for a bulk discount for monthly season passes for their buses which would be making frequent trips daily. Representatives of Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Cognizant, HCL, and Satyam were among those who participated in the meeting. Sources said currently the IT corridor was handling 40,000 vehicles a day. Apart from the primary toll plaza at Perungudi, the TNRDC will be constructing satellite toll plazas at Thorapakkam, the Sholinganallur-Medavakkam junction, the East Coast Road link road to Sholinganallur and at Siruseri, where the first phase of six-lane carriage way of 20.1 km IT corridor ends. Survey onThe TNRDC has already embarked on a survey of all the residents covering 9 villages on the IT corridor besides the residents of Perungudi to make available local resident permits, facilitating toll-free travel on the IT corridor. A smart card will be provided once the local resident survey is completed by the TNRDC after verifying either the passport of the resident, or the voters’ photo identity card or the ration card.
