Barnala distributes Ascendas Excellence Awards

CHENNAI: Welfare associations for the handicapped and voluntary organisations should motivate persons with disability and tap their hidden skills. They should work with a vision to make the differently abled to be definitely abled, Governor Surjit Singh Barnala said on Saturday.

Distributing Ascendas Excellence Awards to differently abled achievers at a function here, he said their rehabilitation was gaining more importance all over the world. Both the Central and State governments had come out with various policies such as reservation in employment, scholarships, concession in travel and skilled job training for the differently abled.

The government was also implementing welfare schemes for them. The government’s efforts should be supplemented by non-governmental organisations.

Mr. Barnala said he was happy to note that Ascendas was motivating the differently abled by instituting awards for them, in coordination with the Tamil Nadu Handicapped Federation Charitable Trust.

Earlier Lim Sin Tiow, CEO, Ascendas India, said the company had a long association with Tamil Nadu. Through the awards, it wanted to further strengthen the ties.

G. Chidambaranathan, managing trustee of the federation, said persons with disability should be given an opportunity to exhibit their talents. Ajit Singh, Consul-General of Singapore, said the awards would not only recognise the achievements of the special achievers but would also uplift their social standing, thus helping them gain in self-reliance. Twenty-five persons were given the awards, which comprised a trophy, a certificate of commendation, and a cash prize.
