NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has prepared ambitious schemes to green the city as part of its preparations for the Commonwealth Games in 2010. These schemes would cost over Rs.34 crore. Addressing a press conference here over the weekend, Mayor Arti Mehra said work on various schemes had already started and new machinery and equipment had been purchased at a cost of Rs.1.8 crore. The Horticulture Department of the MCD has been given a target of planting 2 lakh saplings under the “Green Delhi Action Plan” and of these 70,000 would be of indigenous species. In the past three months, 17,552 saplings have been planted in the city, said the Mayor. The MCD, the Mayor said, would develop 304 parks at a cost of Rs.3.62 crore. In addition, 128 tube-wells would also be installed and pipelines laid for irrigation in 109 parks. For senior citizens, 10,000 steel benches would be provided in various parks along with lighting arrangements, she said, adding that provisions for purchase of equipment and machinery and other related articles required in parks and gardens was already under way. Ms. Mehra said about 200 roundabouts across the Capital would be improved as part of the preparations for the Commonwealth Games. According to the MCD, 54 roads have been identified for landscaping works and budget has been allocated for providing play apparatus, grills and tree guards. At present, the civic body has 27 nurseries and has allocated Rs.1.38 crore for their improvement. Rs.15 crore would be spent on development of 500 parks.
