Bangalore: Mount Carmel College (MCC), which started its journey on July 7, 1948, celebrated its diamond jubilee this week. The celebrations, with a series of events and competitions, will culminate on Monday, with a prayer service, prize distribution ceremony and cultural programmes. A number of competitions were held in the college with the theme, “MCC at 60”. From quiz programmes on history of MCC to a street play on the alumni, students soaked in trivia about their college the whole week. The college with a strength of over 4,000 students, including foreign students, has come a long way from its conception. The Carmelite sisters of St. Teresa, in order to enhance women’s education, started MCC with just 50 students and one building that housed classrooms, office, hostel, library, convent and the chapel. Slowly, the college expanded into what it is now. The year 1951 saw the construction of Fathima Hall or the College Hall, and in 1963, the Home Science Block and the new chapel were built. Soon, the campus had a post graduation and management block, the golden jubilee block, an auditorium and a new pre-university block. The president of the student government of the college, Marianne Thomas, said: “The faculty has supported us through this, but the diamond jubilee celebration is largely a student effort.”
