A slew of competitions for Ganesha festival

MANGALORE: A variety of competitions is in store for people of the city during the Ganesha festival season. One of the contests will test one’s skills in blowing a conch.

The participants (only men) will have to bring conches of their own. The Sarvajanika Sri Ganeshotsava Samiti of Prathapnagar here has organised the competitions, which will begin on July 27, and go on till the first week of September.

According to a release issued by the samiti, the first day will see competitions in rendition of patriotic songs for school and college students, drawing of “rangoli” for women and blowing of conch.

The other competitions include those in rendition of devotional songs for women (August 16); rendition of “Vande Mataram” in full (August 17) and group songs (August 24) and drawing competition (September 9). There will also be a competition in rendition of “slokas” from the Bhagvad Gita. The drawing competition is open only for primary, higher primary and high school children. Children in the first two categories will have to sketch Lord Ganesha using a pencil while higher school students may use water colour to portray a scene taken from rural India.

The organisers say that group songs should be rendered by a maximum of six members and should not exceed four minutes.Use of instruments will not be allowed. For details, call 2456447.
