PUDUCHERRY: A group of nurses learnt the key aspects of medico-legal cases at a Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) programme on Sunday. Nursing superintendents, head nurses and staff nurses of Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Post Graduate Institute and student nurses of Aarupadai Veedu Medical College took part in the CNE programme on “Forensic Nursing-Immediate Necessity.” Project Director H. Ranganath said forensic medicine was mandatory in the curriculum for nursing in Western countries. “The lecture was aimed at teaching the medico legal aspects to nurses. They are not aware of the procedures to be followed in such cases,” he said. Delivering the lecture, Head of Department, Forensic Medicine of Aarupadai Veedu Medical College G. Shrikanthan spoke on the responsibilities of nurses in medico legal cases. The nurses should be aware of the responsibilities in road traffic accident cases, burns, poisoning and alcoholism, he said. The lecture touched upon aspects of how to take consent and type of consent for operations and accident cases, recording identification marks and preserving the contents of the patient’s stomach, proper labelling and handing over it to the police, he added.
