Tirunelveli
GRIEVANCE: A resident of Valliyoor submitting a petition to the Tirunelveli Superintendent of Police R. Dhinakaran at the meet on Sunday. TIRUNELVELI: A Police-Public Meet held at Valliyoor on Sunday witnessed the residents from several parts of this region raising a range of issues, including making of country bombs in coastal hamlets, land grabbing through fake documents, usury, land disputes, etc. After Valliyoor and several surrounding villages were freed from the clutches of history-sheeters Shanmugapandi, his brother Muthukrishnan and their associates, who were arrested by the police on a series of criminal charges, including murders, attempt to murder, cheating, criminal intimidation, land grabbing, conducting ‘kangaroo court’ etc., Deputy Inspector-General Of Police, Tirunelveli Range, during the first Police – Public Meet, promised that the Superintendent of Police would meet the residents of this region on the first Sunday of every month with the objective of ensuring permanent peace there. When the second Police – Public Meet was organised at Valliyoor on Sunday with Superintendent of Police R. Dhinakaran in the chair, a good number of speakers, including president of Valliyoor Traders’ Association P.D.P. Chinnadurai, certified that law and order situation at Valliyoor and its suburbs had improved a lot after police intensified monitoring and appealed to the police to do something effective at the earliest to improve traffic regulation on this hamlet situated on the busy Tirunelveli – Nagercoil National Highway. “Since the lorry and van drivers park their vehicles wherever they want, it causes frequent traffic snarls and fatal accidents within Valliyoor and hence, a dedicated traffic wing should be created,” said advocate Muthu Kesavan. While Raymond of Uvari appealed to the police to take precautionary measures to avoid clash between fishermen on the high seas during the ensuing fishing season (July to September), Maria Koratti of Kooththankuzhi alerted the police that country bombs were being made in her village. “Even after Kooththankuzhi witnessed several murders in the past, in which country bombs were liberally used, no stringent measure had been taken to permanently put an end to country bomb making,” she said. While complimenting the speakers for courageously airing their opinions on public issues, Dr. Dhinakaran, said an action plan to improve traffic within Valliyoor would be ready within 15 days and assured the public that the law-enforcers would neither support nor safeguard the anti-socials. Additional SP, Venugopal, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Valliyoor, Vijaykumar and others spoke.
