Audacious attack

It is very painful to hear the sad killing of 32 Greyhounds personnel of Andhra Pradesh Police near Chitrakonda reservoir by Maoists. They could have been saved had the Police Department adopted proper strategy duly taking the help of the Navy for the necessary aerial surveillance.

The movement of Maoists hiding in the jungles could be tracked easily by aerial surveillance and the information passed to forces engaged in combing operation against Maoists.

Threat to press

Even as hundreds of atrocity cases remain unattended to under the SC, ST Atrocities (Prevention) Act, it is strange that Rajasekhara Reddy regime has chosen to act fast on the basis of a case filed against Andhra Jyothi Telugu daily newspaper by a leader of a particular community.

That the newspaper was exposing some acts of misrule of the State government cannot be unlinked with the police raid bears testimony to ominous abuse of the laws which are meant to protect the rights and privileges of SCs and STs.

Where are enumerators?

Contrary to newspaper reports there is no evidence so far of anyone approaching voters in our locality of MMTC Colony to update voter lists, as directed by the State election officials.

The Joint Collector is requested to clarify what steps the voters are to take.

If so desired, we can keep the passport size photographs of all eligible voters in the house ready. But we should know when they would visit and specific guidelines in the matter.

Keep it clean

Recently, we visited the Simhachalam temple for a darshan of Lord Varaha Lakshmi Nrusimhaswamy. The free darshan and Rs.20 queue lanes were filled with garbage that emanated stench.

When we reached the counter, there was none to sell tickets.

We proceeded further to enter the temple complex. There was nobody to take even a complaint. Hindu temples are most neglected in hygiene and rituals and the staff have become rude and corruption has reached its zenith.

I appeal to the authorities concerned to take steps for better maintenance of the queue complex and the temple premises.

Chaos on the road

The petrol pump area at Venkojipalem has become a traffic hazard with frequent fatal accidents being reported.

This is mainly due to the attempts by the road users from MVP Colony to join the National Highway No. 5 on the wrong route in order to proceed to H.B. Colony.

Added to this, there is always unauthorized parking of autorickshaws, city buses, etc., at this junction during peak hours, causing traffic jams.

I request the Commissioner of Police to kindly post a traffic constable at least from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. to prevent traffic congestions and accidents due to violation of traffic rules, without further delay.
