POWER SAVING: The new light emitting diode installed at Raja theatre junction in Puducherry.

PUDUCHERRY: As part of the traffic improvement plan, the traffic police will soon replace incandescent lamps with Light Emitting Diode (LED) at major traffic signals in the Puducherry region.

A LED has been installed at the Raja Theatre Junction at the cost of Rs. 3 lakh. Plans are afoot to put in place such equipment at Odiansalai, Rajiv Gandhi Square and Indira Gandhi Square in Puducherry, a senior officer in the Traffic Department told The Hindu.

The LED traffic signals have become an efficient and effective alternative to incandescent lamps, he said, adding that it consumed less power and also had a long life.

There were complaints from motorists that it was difficult for them to spot the incandescent lamps during daytime. It also needed regular repairs, he added.

“So we have decided to install LEDs at the signals in a phased manner. A private agency has come forward to sponsor installation cost of all other LEDs,” he said.

The Traffic Department also planned to procure more breath analysers to conduct special drive against drunken driving, he said, adding that several new traffic improvement measures would be discussed in the next meeting of the Traffic Standing Committee.

After the decision to introduce spot fine for traffic violations by goods and transport vehicles, in the last three days alone 110 cases were registered and a fine of around Rs. 4,000 was collected, he said. Major violations, included drivers not wearing uniform, entry into prohibited areas, parking violations, negligent driving and overloading.
