‘Stop throwing plastic waste everywhere’

Sir, — World Environment Day was recently observed here as it was done everywhere. But nothing seems to change the attitude of people. For instance, plastic bags and bottles are used and thrown all around the place, unmindful of the consequences. Water gets logged in drains, the roads and the sea shore look ugly. There are instances where low lying areas experience flood-like situation because of water-logging in drains. Hence, it would be better if everyone throws plastic waste in garbage bins and help the authorities in their efforts to keep the city clean and protect the environment.

Free saplings to schoolchildren

Sir, — The Forest Department should distribute free saplings to schoolchildren to propagate environment awareness, check carbon dioxide emission and global warming. The department should join hands with the Department of Education and plant saplings throughout the State. The local bodies, such as municipal corporations, town panchayats, gram panchayats and NGOs, should also be included.

General among Generals

Sir, — Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw was known for his clarity of thought and pragmatism. I had the privilege of meeting him on three occasions and I spoke to him twice on the phone. He was an inspiration to one and all. He was a General among Generals, a leader among leaders and an officer among officers. I appeal to all the television channels, including the Doordarshan, to produce a documentary highlighting his spotless character, professionalism and great achievements.
