Drunken driving

Hurrah to Ms. R. Jayanthi! Soon after taking over as the Deputy Commissioner of Police for crime and traffic, Ms. Jayanthi said her priority would be to make Salem city accident-free (June 24). Best wishes to her. The real reason for the ever increasing traffic accidents is drunken driving. Ms. Jayanthi keep a strict vigil on rash, negligent and drunken driving. Jaywalking pedestrians should also be booked to ensure safety on roads.

V.S. Venkatavaradan,

Salem.

Education today

Education today is going down the hill. Earlier admissions to professional colleges were given on merit but now it is the money that talks. Quality of education in some self-financing institutions leaves much to be desired. Colleges are run without government approval. These colleges take original certificates from students and employees and harass them. People who pass examinations through dubious means are paid more than those who are meritorious. This should be arrested to save education.

Mythily,

Salem.

Well done

Most of the places in the west of Salem appear clean of late. Almost all roads remain bright at night with street lights burning to their capacity.

Every house gets its due share of drinking water.

The credit for this goes to Deputy Mayor C. Panneer Selvam. His simplicity and sincerity have earned him a good name.

I hope he extends his service to other zones of Salem too. My kudos to this politician with a difference.

R. Nagarajan,

Salem.
